Review: Paul Heyman Layeth the Smacketh Down

By Stanley Dobner
Apr 15, 2008

Paul Heyman is presently the host and one of the producers of NewsCorp's first foray into Broadband Television, a hi-def New York-centric weekly show called "The Heyman Hustle." The program airs every Tuesday on Sun-TV in the UK, the broadband video section of the popular London-based newspaper.  Heyman was, by all accounts, also one of the most influential creative forces in professional wrestling for the past twenty years.

His ECW had the concept of the 90s, borrowed by Vince McMahon's WWE as the theme behind "The Attitude Era," which spawned the global popularity of the brand along with superstars like Stone Cold Steve Austin, D/X, and The Rock. Heyman was also head writer for World Wrestling Entertainment's "Smackdown" show during a time period that saw the show pick up huge buzz and significantly increased ratings.

Heyman was interviewed by Alex Marvez of The Rocky Mountain News and Scripps Howard News Service, and made a strong statement regarding his feelings about his abilities in the wrestling industry. "I absolutely believe I can out-(write) anyone in the  (wrestling) industry today, but it's a one-brand business right now," Heyman told Marvez, "(WWE) runs differently than (my) type of writing."

But Heyman is at peace with that, saying "I have no bitterness about the wrestling industry. I've lived out every dream and had the time of my life. But it wasn't fun anymore. My time was up."

Heyman also commented on WWE's version of Extreme Championship Wrestling. When asked about Vince McMahon's resurrection of the brand Heyman brought from a South Philadelphia Bingo Hall to a Global Cult Phenomenon, Heyman said "You can cry all day long that the show is not ECW and shouldn't be called ECW," Heyman said. "But it's (WWE's) product. They bought it and have every right to do what they want with it. There's nothing you can do about it, so why get upset over it?"

Heyman teased some other entertainment projects following the Hustle, saying "My dreams are not confined to pro wrestling. I've got a lot of other dreams, too. Now is the time to chase them."  You can read the interview in its entirety here.
