Syesha Mercado & David Cook Chasing David Archuleta on American Idol

By Angela Carson

What happened this season on American idol?  Jason Castro is out and was voted off the show on Wednesday night and seems legitimately happy that he no longer has to put up with the nonsense of the show.  That leaves David Cook and Syesha Mercado chasing David Archuleta for the winner of season 7 of American idol.  Where did this all go wrong?  Was it with the way too early exit of Michael Johns and Carly Smithson?

This year started out with so much promise, but as the weeks unfolded somewhere the show again got lost.  David Cook has tons of talent but he hasn't had a stellar performance in weeks.  Syesha Mercado is gorgeous and certainly looks like a star but she hasn't really performed all the well either.  David Archuleta is as dry and boring as a favorite has ever been.  But they are the top three on American idol.

Some have compared Archuleta to Taylor Hicks and season five and even though I thought Hicks was more of a lounge act at least he had fun on the stage.  He made idol fun to watch with his antics each week.  David Archuleta doesn't even seem to connect at all with the audience.  While there are screaming twelve-year-old girls eating him up, there is no depth, and no fun at all.  His performances have been safe and drab.  But as this is American idol, he is the favorite.

Host Ryan Seacrest claimed that 51 million people voted this week and as ratings claim that actual viewers are no where near that massive number that means that the Archuleta tweens are voting in multiples.  Syesha and Cook may not stand a chance.  I can't believe that this contest has produced no real stars since Chris Daughtry in season five and Carrie Underwood in season four.  This seems like another tough year for idol.  All of our American idol coverage is here, check back for more coverage as the top three head to their hometowns this week.  That usually delivers some pretty juicy off stage moments.
