Angelina Jolie, 34, traveled to Syria with Brad Pitt to meet with Iraqi refugees and hold talks with the country's leader. ''Most Iraqi refugees cannot return to Iraq in view of the severe trauma they experienced there, the uncertainty linked to the coming Iraqi elections, the security issues and the lack of basic services.

They will, therefore, be in need of continued support from the international community,'' Jolie said in a statement. Thousands of Iraqis in Syria and other countries refuse to return to violence-torn Iraq.

Elections are scheduled to take place there in January 2010. Jolie met with Bashar Assad and his wife Asma.

The actress went to Syria for the second time in two years in her capacity as an Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
