Ashville NY firm Fairbank Farms recalled over 546,000 pounds of beef products due to possible E. coli contamination. Two people are dead in two separate states (one from New York and another from New Hampshire) and officials believe tainted ground beef infected with E. coli O157:H7 may be responsible.

Another two dozen are sick in eight states. Infection with E. coli O157:H7 can have a wide range of effects, from mild intestinal discomfort to death, reports the New York Times.

"Any customers from northeastern or mid-Atlantic states who have identified recalled ground beef products should remove the product from their freezers and return it to their stores for full reimbursement," the company said.

CNN reports, the company set in motion the voluntary recall for ground beef "produced between September 14 and September 16 after the meat was "possibly linked" to E. coli O157:H7." Check your freezers.

A video report is here.  The Times report adds, "All are stamped "EST 492," either within the Department of Agriculture's mark of inspection or near the nutrition facts."

The beef was sold mostly in the northeast region and includes stores ACME, BJ's, Ford Brothers, Giant Food Stores, Price Chopper, Shaw's, and Trader Joe's. The products affected are listed here on the USDA Web site.

The government website notes that "Consumer questions should be directed to the company's Consumer Hotline at (877) 546-0122."
