Jessica Simpson wanted to do up Hubby Nick's birthday with a message that told the world that her marriage to her hubby was okay.  But the plans for a big blow-out (for Nick's) 32nd birthday bash turned out to be a bust according to a published report.

Jeannette Walls Dishes:

Simpson wanted to throw her reality-show costar “the party of the century” because she wanted to “show Nick how much she loves him and wants to make things work between them,” a source tells the upcoming issue of Life & Style Weekly.

Lachey threw a bit of a wet blanket on the festivities when he reportedly told her, “Do what you want, but leave me out of it.”

Ouch!

There was reportedly a smaller party for her hubby and his family at an upscale Cincinnati restaurant on Nov. 10.

The next day, the two had another party in Los Angeles for friends, but neither Simpson’s parents nor sister Ashlee, attended.

“While the dinner wasn’t a total disaster, the friend of Jess’s says the couple continue to grow apart,” according to Life & Style.

Jeannette Walls does report that reps for both stars deny that and say the marriage is very happy.

Correction:

Original column revised to correct Jessica's age and the fact that the party plan was for Nick.

Jessica's age was misreported at 32, that's hubby Nick's age and it was his birthday - not Jessica's.

 We regret the error.
