Nick Cannon may have looked quite confident presenting Lindsay Lohan with the VH1 Big in '05 "It" Girl Award this weekend, but earlier, when asked about rumors of a romance, he was a bit more demure.

After a few nervous laughs, Cannon told this column, "I'm very fond of her. She's a very beautiful person and a great friend of mine. And I probably wouldn't be here tonight if she weren't here." Well, then.

The pair are currently filming the movie "Bobby," which is being directed by Emilio Estevez. "It's about the assassination of Robert Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel and what happened in the course of that day. It's going to be really cool," claimed Cannon.

And what a cast.

"It's got Demi Moore, Elijah Wood, Sharon Stone, Anthony Hopkins -- it's crazy." Cannon and Lohan were two of the many celebs who descended upon Sony Studios on Saturday for the VH1 Awards, which included performances by INXS, Def Leppard, Audio Slave and Fall Out Boy.

"It's been a great year for me," noted Cannon. So what's next? "My album drops at the top of the year. Kanye [West] produced it. It's going to be ridiculous."

MEANWHILE:

The young actor is prepping for a boxing movie currently titled "The Hawk." "It's a father and son story that I wrote. I'm still training, but I don't start filming 'til next year," he explained. "I always liked boxing. I got into boxing because Will [Smith] was doing 'Ali' and I was hanging out on the set with him. I got with the boxing trainer who trained Will for that, and we just kind of came up with the idea."

YOU'D BETTER WATCH OUT:

Judge Reinhold reports from the set of "Santa Claus 3" that, "There was an elfin uprising the other day. Someone introduced too much sugar into their environment, and they were having a meltdown. It led to production meetings about elfin nutrition." He's referring to some 375 children between the ages of six and 14 who are portraying Santa's elves in the second sequel to Tim Allen's hit, "The Santa Clause." Other than that, Reinhold reports shooting is going well on the L.A.-based production that is expected to continue into February.

Reinhold is taking Saturday (12/10) off to participate in The Magic Castle's star-packed benefit for hurricane relief, "Magic Aid," hosted by Jason Alexander. "I think they're going to saw me in half," he says, speaking of the open-to-the-public event at the illustrious magician's club. Proceeds will be split between the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the Humane Society. "It's the fist time in its history that the Magic Castle has opened its doors for a non-member event, which is really cool," he adds.

Reinhold reports that his obnoxious psychologist character "has gone from being a cynical nonbeliever in the first 'Santa Clause' to being a Christmas fanatic in this one. They've turned him into a New Agey, touchy-feely guy who teaches an elfin yoga class at the North Pole." This "Clause" pits Santa against the nefarious Jack Frost, played by Martin Short. "He's hilarious in the role. Watching him and Tim is like seeing King Kong and Godzilla of comedy playing off each other," says Judge.

HORSING AROUND:

What do such megastars as Matchbox Twenty front-man-cum-solo recording artist Rob Thomas, country star LeAnn Rimes, legendary Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, and Grammy-winning country singer/songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter have in common? They're all horse lovers and owners whose emotional connection to their four-legged pals is explored on Animal Planet's Jan. 29 "Trail Mix" special hosted by Broadway star and fellow horse lover Linda Eder. "You'll see a side of them you wouldn't normally see," promises Eder. "I was very relieved to find how warm and giving they were. It was so easy to hang out with these people because we have so much in common. We could sit all day long and talk about horses."

Meanwhile, Eder's been wowing audiences around the country performing tunes from her latest critically acclaimed CD, "By Myself: A Tribute to Judy Garland." She says since her young son was born she tries to only do weekend gigs "so I can be a regular mom during the week. But my goal is to finally go to Europe this coming summer, and I can take him with me," says the singer, who's scheduled to perform at Los Angeles' Wilshire Theatre Saturday (12/10).

PURLS OF WISDOM:

With her and Carol Burnett's hilarious "Once Upon a Mattress" coming up Dec. 18 on ABC, her voice role in the Dec. 13-release "Kronk's New Groove" DVD and various other performing assignments keeping Tracey Ullman busy, there's still time for another project close to her heart. "I'm doing a knitting book. I'm mad about knitting and knitting design," reports Ullman. The tome has no estimated time of arrival as yet.
