Syndicated columnist Patrick J. Buchanan used his column this week to call on the US Congress to begin impeachment proceedings against President George W. Bush.
"Some courageous Republican, to get the attention of this White House, should drop into the hopper a bill of impeachment, charging George W. Bush with a conscious refusal to uphold his oath and defend the states of the Union against "invasion."
The invasion Buchanan is speaking of is illegal immigration.
Twice, George Bush has taken an oath to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." Article IV, Section 4 of that Constitution reads, "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against invasion," Buchanan writes.
He concludes it may be the only way to get the president's attention, "before the border vanishes and our beloved country dissolves into MexAmerica."
Sigh. Remember when Pat Buchanan was relevant?
I agree that illegal immigration is one of the president's biggest failures. But to suggest impeachment for Bush on this tells more about Pat Buchanan than it does the president.
