But should it lead to violence - of course not.  But in New York - that has allegedly happened.

A man named Cory K. Favreau took offense to his mother's comment about Katharine McPhee and how she would be successful despite losing to Taylor Hicks, according to a published report.

He then struck her with a chain.

The Plattsburgh Press Republican carries this bizarre story:

***

Cory K. Favreau, 24, of 200A Margaret St. was discussing the television show "American Idol" with his mother, Jan M. Chagnon, on May 24 at about 10:15 p.m., according to Plattsburgh City Court records.

At that time, Chagnon told Favreau that a particular contestant, Katharine McPhee, was going to have a successful career despite losing to another contestant, Taylor Hicks.

Favreau allegedly stood up, made a malicious comment to his mother and struck her in the head with a sharpened, cross-shaped object attached to a bicycle chain.

Wow - lighten up and stop drinking while watching Idol.

Certainly neither Taylor Hicks Or Katharine McPhee want people to resort to violence in their defense.  It's only a talent show and is meant to be fun.
