Will Phil Stacey go from American Idol to defending America?  Phil Stacey, the former American Idol finalist and sailor for the Navy, may have to report for duty in Iraq, the Los Angeles Times reports.  The singer seemed to really find his rythym the last few weeks, but was voted off American Idol last Wednesday along with Chris Richardson.

Reports note that though Navy officials have not confirmed that Stacey will go to Iraq, they say that they have talked to Stacey about his next assignment and discussed whether he will be able to join the finalists’ tour this summer.

The Times reports Bill Dougherty, a Navy spokesman in Jacksonville, Fla., where Stacey is based, says members of the Navy Band Southeast like Stacey don't usually deploy overseas. Stacey is lead singer for the Navy rock band, Pride.

Navy spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Davis says Stacey is "tremendously valuable." Davis says Stacey showed off skills he learned in the Navy.  The New Republic reported the USO struggles to find celebrities to entertain troops. With Stacey, says the Times, "the military has a singing star it can order to perform anywhere."

Navy officials have not confirmed whether Phil Stacey will face deployment.
