I knew that Ron Paul had no chance of winning the GOP nomination for president, but I had hoped that he could move the debate a bit when it came to the war in Iraq. Most of that hope faded this weekend when I finally watched the replay of the Republican presidential debate on Fox News. I've read all of the outrage from those that are supporters of Dr. Paul and certainly understand it. But this is a sound bite world and he was trounced on the stage in the eyes of most observers.

It's a shame as Dr. Paul is a very bright man. There is indeed blowback against the United States and it would be a good thing if that point could be delivered. Paul was trying to describe the motivation behind the attacks on the United States. But he lost.

I've seen all of the opinion that it is the mainstream media and Fox News that has ambushed Ron Paul. But it wasn't them, he was ambushed by frontrunner Rudy Giuliani and he did it with the skills of a veteran politician. When Paul said. “They don’t come here to attack us because we’re rich and we’re free. They come and they attack us because we’re over there," Rudy answered hard and fast.
“May I comment on that?” Rudy asked. “That’s really an extraordinary statement. That’s an extraordinary statement, as someone who lived through the attack of September 11 that we invited the attack because we were attacking Iraq. I don’t think I’ve heard that before, and I’ve heard some pretty absurd explanations for September 11th.”

They were standing in South Carolina and the crowd went wild. I've heard Rudy called shameless and evil for his attack on Paul. I guess that can be argued, but it will be a loss. Rudy played politics, and Dr. Paul tried 'straight talk.'
Unfortunately, politics won out.
