The dark-haired beauty is thrilled that the sequel to last year's breakout hit, High School Musical, just beat the record for biggest audience ever on basic cable TV, with a staggering 17.24 million viewers! But now the petite 5'1" California native, 18, is trying to cope with life in the limelight.
"I really am a very private person, and I love keeping my life to myself – that's how I've always been," the actress reveals in Teen magazine's fall issue, on newsstands Sept 4. Little by little, she's learning to let her fans get to know her.

Star Magazine reports that though she's still negotiating to play Gabriella in a big-screen version of High School Musical, Vanessa is also eager to play someone other than the shy mathlete who comes out of her shell. "I'd like to do something different," she says.
"I don't want to go off and shock everybody, but I don't want to keep playing the same role." Something tells us you won't be for long!
