The reviews are in - Britney Spears really bombed at the MTV Video Music Awards. The former top of the heap pop princess had once dominated the VMA stage with snakes and lesbian kissing with Madonna was reduced to a blank state and some horrific dance moves on Sunday night.

She couldn't even lip-sync her very simple song. But now the excused are already coming in - it was Sarah Silverman's fault and Criss Angel's. BreathHeavy , a Britney fansite, reports that she wanted to ditch her performance, because she overheard Sarah Silverman's opening monologue during rehearsals.

Spears' sons, Jayden and Sean, who turn 1 and 2 next week, respectively, were fare game for Sarah. "Have you seen Britney's kids? Oh my god, they are the most adorable mistakes you will ever see!" Silverman trilled. "They are as cute as the hairless vagina they came out of."

Michael K of D-Listed reports that MTV told Sarah to cut that from her act, but Sarah didn't. It still isn't really a reason. Sarah did her monologue AFTER Brit's trash can talent show, so if MTV told Britney that the joke was cut then why would she be bothered while performing? Good point.

Immediately following Spears' opening performance, Silverman poked fun at the singer's early rise to fame. "Was that incredible?" she asked the crowd. "She is amazing. I mean, she is 25 years old and she's already accomplished everything she's going to accomplish in her life."

She continued: "It's weird to think that just a few years ago on this very show, she was this, like, sweet innocent little girl in slutty clothes writhing around with a python. That's not nice calling Madonna a python." She then added the jokes about Brit's kids. Britney would have caught a ton of bad press if she bailed.
But it would have been better than that.
