Ron Paul Cracks $3M in One Day, Melts Down Server, Burns Bandwidth

He is Ron Paul.  He's not a huge fan of paper money but he is willing to take it from supporters that are cranking out a one day fundraising drive that at this writing is kicking up just north of $2.5 million.  (I've rounded up to three million and am guessing just a little bit more).  His supporters are calling it a money bomb. I would have went with a gold bomb to keep with the whole Dr. Paul theme but who can argue with the success?

KVUE's Elise Hu has this at the "Political Junkie": "He still registers in the single-digits in national polls, but Texas Republican Ron Paul supporters are true-believers. They are the die-hard, hardcore, we'll stand in the rain holding a boombox outside your window kind of supporters."  For those Paul supporters that weren't quite born when the film debuted it is from the movie "Say Anything").

Hu notes that "This summer, Paul became an internet phenom, drawing more google searches one week than the iPhone and Paris Hilton. We even did a story on his Austin "meetup.com" group because it was among the largest in the nation."

I love the fact that his fans are making news like this.  He needs cash to get his message across as he gets only nibbles in the mainstream press and he is never going to make it to the top tier of candidates without some coverage.

If you want to know how successful the effort is - check out the note at the top of the page on his Ron Paul Graph.  "We are experiencing some bandwidth issues. Please limit your refreshing to once every 10 minutes or more!"  You'll be lucky if it loads as the traffic is straining the server big time.

Yes us crazy Paul supporters are trying to see exactly how much he is hauling in with each click of the mouse every few minutes.  Sorry Jackson.

Another update from Hu - "As of this afternoon, his campaign tells me online donations - not pledges - have ALREADY TOPPED the goal. Only, his campaign says it isn't behind - nor is it organizing - this project. It was started by a few of those hardcore supporters out there, and spread through word-of-mouth online.  As of 2:27pm, donations hit $2.5 million. That's $2.5 million in 14 hours.

I feel pretty safe with my $3 million prediction - as long as the servers hold.
