New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is expected to step down as the governor of New York.  That will leave a huge void in New York State and one that will be immediately filled by a man named David Paterson.  Lt. Gov David Paterson is the current Lieutenant Governor of New York. He is the first African American  to hold that position.

He will move right in immediately and attempt to calm things down and take over as New York Governor.  He will then serve out the term of Gov. Eliot Spitzer.  He is much more liberal than former Gov. Spitzer and he will be a major change from Spitzer and should make things exciting, though quite different.  It is said that Paterson is ready to step in today and take the oath of office.

He will be in office until he has to campaign for re-election in 2010.  He gets the full term.  He will be the first African American to hold the position of the governor of New York.  The scandal will make the job very difficult for Paterson as Republican will use Spitzer's transgressions against him. He was elected Senate Minority Leader in 2002, becoming both the first non-white state legislative leader and the highest-ranking black elected official in the history of New York State.

Before this whole mess with Spitzer happened, Paterson had been mentioned in some political circles as a possible successor to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton should the fellow New York Democrat win the 2008 US presidential election and resign the seat to assume the presidency.
