Talk about a sugar rush gone bad. Michael Sheridan, an eighth-grade honors student that is only fourteen years old has been popped by the candy cops and was suspended for one day for buying a bag of candy at school in New Haven, Connecticut. He was also barred from attending an honors student dinner and stripped of his title as class vice president.

Wait, what? "He says he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules -- although he did notice the student selling the Skittles on February 26 was being secretive." Nothing like a little black market candy buy to keep the authorities on their toes.

It sounds like the fat kids are to blame or at least those with thyroid problems. School spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo said the New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a districtwide school wellness policy. There may be some hope, the school is considering reducing the punishment.
The principal originally ordered an immediate three-day suspension, but Sheridan's mother, Shelli, fought to reduce the punishment to one day. "I'm thinking, you know, he was hungry," she said. "He wanted a piece of candy. So, OK, I didn't think it was such a big deal."
