"Michael and Heath hung out together when they were younger," a friend of Michael, 29, tells Star.  “They were both born and raised in Perth and would go to parties and concerts together.” Hmm, who knew these guys were once friends?  The Brokeback Mountain actor died from an accidental drug overdose on Jan. 22 in his New York City apartment.  He was 28.

Michael was in Hollywood and well on his way to making the cut as one of Idol’s top 24 finalists when he heard about Heath's death, the magazine reports.  "The news hit Michael hard, and he had to take a stop back from all the Idol hoopla,” the friend told Star.

“Heath was a favorite son to all Australians, in particular to residents of Perth.  Being that they already shared a personal bond, his passing really was an emotional moment for Michael.  I’m sure Michael feels that if he becomes the Idol champ, he’ll be doing his hometown proud – and will also be honoring the memory of Heath, the other hometown hero.”
