American idol is plugging away through the top ten and the show that once showed promise to be one of the best ever has hit a bit of a snag. There appears to be only a few solid performers that can deliver each week and the next few weeks should prove of little interest. David Cook is the rocking Chris Daughtry of this season and he will make the top five but like Daughtry he will likely get dumped at some point in a stunner.

Brooke White and Carly Smithson have a really good shot at making the top two and would likely face off against favorite David Archuleta. But some believe he may be in a bit of trouble as his star is fading fast. I don't believe that, though and I think this season has all of the trappings of one of those Taylor Hicks versus Katharine McPhee type battles.

I should note that Brooke White and Carly Smithson both have far more talent than McPhee and Archuleta has way more talent than Hicks will ever have. My comparison is because David Cook is the best performer (just like with Daughtry) but as this is a popularity contest, I think it will be Archuleta versus White.

The next few weeks should yield few surprises. Chikezie has already been eliminated tonight and that means that these four will go next in some particular order. Kristy Lee Cook, Ramiele Malubay, Syesha Mercado and Jason Castro. The top five seems almost set in concrete.

So was dumping Chikezie the right move for this week? It is as good as any. All of the remaining are on the tour and the man has talent and will now get his shot to make a living at singing. The same goes for all of the others that will soon get the boot.

I'm hoping for an upset at some point and would love to see David Archuleta dropped before the top three. But with his rabid fans, it seems like he is a lock. Check out all of our American idol coverage here including the stories about Archuleta's dad, who is getting criticized a bit by judge Simon Cowell and many pundits, and that seems to be the reason that some believe that he may be in trouble.
