American Idol contestant Carly Smithson carries some ink on that Hollywood stage each week and when they show her clips from a few years ago you can see how much has been added.  She even likes to make note of her new tattoos each week as she moves along through the competition.  And her husband, San Diego tattoo artist Todd Smithson, is his wife’s biggest fan.

But People magazine notes that up until the March 18 episode – when he finally appeared on-camera-he was seldom spotted in the audience during TV shots featuring Idol family members.   He's her good luck charm so why was he such a mystery man?

On-set sources tell the magazine that they believe his lower profile stemmed from concern that his full-body tattoos would turn off conservative members of the Idol voting audience.  It all seems a bit ridiculous if that was the reason.  Cue the rep™: Fox and American Idol had no comment on the diss according to report from People.

But the article notes that due to the high profile of 30 million viewers each week, the Smithson family is already a winner – even without camera time.  Todd says “business is a little busier” at his tattoo shop, Nothing Sacred, since Carly's debut on the show.  Check out all of our American idol coverage here.  Post show analysis, results and predictions for the show are all available.
