BATON ROUGE, La. - A Louisiana state cocktail? Sorry it is nixed. The Sazerac, the first cocktail invented in New Orleans and one of the first in the country was almost the official state cocktail. But the proposal to honor the New Orleans cocktail has gone down like a smooth shot of expensive booze in the state legislature.

Louisiana State Cocktail Sazerac?

According to NOLA, Sen. Edwin Murray, D-New Orleans made the proposal last month. "We will probably have a little fun with this bill" as a diversion from the heavy issues lawmakers will face at the upcoming session, Murray said. "There will be a very aggressive effort to get it done."

Nothing like boozing it up with the Louisiana state government. Cooler and more sober heads prevailed, and the Louisiana Senate on Tuesday rejected legislation that would have made the whiskey-based beverage the official state cocktail. The vote wasn't close.

According to the Associated Press, the bill won just eight votes of support, five of them from senators who represent the New Orleans area. Twenty-seven senators voted against it. The wire service notes that a Sazerac contains whiskey, sugar, bitters and absinthe, or a substitute anise-flavored liquor
