It's April 15, the dreaded tax day for many Americans who have put off even starting to work on their tax forms.  So what do you do, if you are like many American taxpayers you file an extension.  So where do you get those extension forms for the IRS, and what's next?.  According the IRS website, if you are not able to file your federal individual income tax return by the due date, you may be able to get an automatic 6-month extension of time to file.

That will be a whole lot of taxpayers and remember, just because you file and extension doesn't mean you get out of paying your taxes, if you owe money you still will need to send a check, the extension just gives you more time to actually file the return.

Today is the crunch day for accountants everywhere as procrastinators wander in asking for miracles and those that just don't have it together to get all of the receipts, or everything else they need to complete their filing process, want more time.  You can have it, but you need to file the correct form.

To get that needed extension you have to file by midnight on April 15, Form 4868, (Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Income Tax Return).  You can download the form here or your local IRS office will have them ready.  Many local Post Offices do stay open until midnight local time.
