Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi celebrated their highly publicized engagement with a whirlwind trip to Italy. The couple arrived in Rome on June 30 and checked into the same $4,000 a night penthouse suite at the Hassler Roma hotel where Tom Cruise and the fabulous Katie Holmes™ stayed for their 2006 wedding a report from Star Magazine details this week.

"They were really affectionate and are obviously head over heels in love," one eyewitness tells Star. That night, the fiancées kicked off their practice honeymoon agenda with an intimate dinner at Sabatini. The next day, Ellen (at 50 years old is she a cougar) and Portia, 35, moved to the trendy Hotel de Russie before heading out to see the Eternal City sites, the report notes.

Their sightseeing trip included the Coliseum and the Vatican's St. Peter's Square, where the pair opted to stay in their car, taking pictures from the window, the report claims. Later in the trip they headed to Naples to continue their Italian adventure aboard a private yacht.

"This trip is just the beginning of a whole new life for them," says a friend of the duo, who want to get married in California this summer. "It's truly a dream come true."
