It is the time of the year again where Comic-Con International invades San Diego and what many call a freak show is open for business. According to one online description, Comic-Con "is an annual multigenre fan convention founded as the Golden State Comic Book Convention and later the San Diego Comic Book Convention in 1970 by Shel Dorf and a group of San Diegans."
Comic-Con "Freak Show" Opens
The report notes that it is traditionally a four-day event (Thursday through Sunday—though a four hour preview night on Wednesday is open to guests pre-registered for all four days) held during the summer in San Diego, California, at the San Diego Convention Center. Comic-Con is both the name of the annual event and the common name of the organization.

The Los Angeles Times has all the coverage you could ever want here along with lots of photos of the wild event and the costumes here. If you really believe this thing is nothing more than a freak show just take a look at the monster hit movie of the summer. "The Dark Knight" rules the box office and Comic-Con International is massive.
The Times calls it the "mutant cousin" of the Sundance Film Festival and while that might be close, there is too much money at stake to ever discount the geeks and freaks that make their way to the festival each year.
