"Dark Knight" star Morgan Freeman and his troubled marriage hit front and center this week when he and a female companion were involved in the late night rollover accident that seriously injured the 71-year-old star. The actor was in the company of a 48 year old Memphis woman, DeMaris Meyer, and driving her 1997 Nissan Maxima at 11:30 p.m., Aug. 3 when he apparently became distracted. He drove off the road and, in attempting to recover, caused the car to roll over several times.

After the terrifying accident, Freeman's 67-year-old wife Myrna rushed to the hospital in Memphis to be by his side - but she would later file for divorce, reports this week claimed. Many thought suspicions were raised when Demaris Meyer was the passenger.

The National Enquirer reported in July that Freeman's wife of 24 years had consulted a divorce attorney after discovering he had an affair with a close friend of hers. The weekly magazine has in a report out this week that it has not revealed the name of the mistress, but it is not Meyer.

Freeman and Meyer had to be cut out of the car by rescuers, who said both were chatting and coherent. They were transported to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis by helicopter.

The Oscar winner's painful injuries - including a broken arm, elbow and shoulder damage - required surgery. The roads were still slick from an afternoon rain, and police speculated that Freeman may have fallen asleep at the wheel and lost control of the car.

He was traveling eastbound, apparently from Clarksdale, Miss., where Freeman owns a nightclub and a restaurant, to Memphis.
