Don't sell that SUV just yet.  What seems like a wild prediction on gas prices should have motorists and consumers very happy if it comes true.

Gas Prices Fall to near $2 Per Gallon by Thanksgiving?
Gas Prices Fall to near $2 Per Gallon by Thanksgiving?

USA Today is reporting that gasoline prices are falling fast and could keep dropping for months.

"The only place they have to go is down," says Fred Rozell, gasoline analyst at the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS). "We'll be closer to $2 than $3 come Thanksgiving."

That's a bold prediction.

Travel organization AAA foresees prices 10 cents a gallon lower by the end of next week. It reported a nationwide average of $2.84 Tuesday, the lowest since April 20.

This would be a tremendous boost for the economy and just in time for Christmas.

Continued lower prices "may act like a tax cut" and stimulate spending, says Richard DeKaser, chief economist at National City in Cleveland. He calculates that higher energy prices the first six months cut growth of consumer spending 1 percentage point.

This may also have an effect on politics.

Many Democrats plan on highlighting gas prices to try and get elected, though none can say what they would do to change the way the market is structured to improve prices.

Their only answer is 'Cater-esque' as in forcing people into tiny cars.

That won't really fly for many and if gas prices are tumbling towards two-bucks a gallon, that issue is gone.

Keep any eye on that gas price sign.
