The US Congress passed a bloated $700 trillion bill on Friday and it was immediately signed into law by President George W. Bush.  Will I help the economy - that remains to be seen and on Friday stocks continued their downward spiral.  Everyone seems to now be in agreement that the economy is struggling and a report from the New York Daily News details that there are even "More abandoned pets as economy goes to the dogs."  Foreclosure is leaving many pets behind.

The cute play on words from the paper aside the situation is dire form many.  An article earlier this year had this, " disconcerting consequence of many foreclosures is the increasing numbers of abandoned pets left behind. Some home owners dump their pets at animal shelters where, due to overpopulation at shelters, almost half of incoming animals are euthanized."

The report from the Daily News notes that even Manhattan is seeing increases in the city as "animal shelters across the city say the number of pets being abandoned or given up for adoption has risen in recent weeks as owners tighten their belts." Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition founder Vinny Spinola tells the paper how tough it is for some.

"If somebody's got a job out of state and has to leave tomorrow they may have to give up their pet.  He adds, "Some people are honest and just say they can't afford it."
