Yugo Jokes Back in Vogue: Serbia Says Goodbye

Yugo jokes are back in vogue as Serbia bid a goodbye to the little car. How do you double the value of a Yugo? Fill the gas tank!  The car is history and the last yugo has rolled off the assembly line.  If you believe Detroit, GM, Ford and Chrysler can't be far behind.  But let's stick to the cheap little Serbian box.

The UK Guardian reports that soon after the Yugo hit the U.S. markets in 1986, it sold for the bargain-basement price of just $3,990.  It wasn't very well received though and the paper notes, "the boxy Yugo was derided by American car magazines "as barely qualifying as a car" and "an assembled bag of nuts and bolts."

The Associated Press is having some fun with it and delivers a few humorous jokes at the Yugo's expense. What do you call a Yugo's shock absorbers? Drumroll, please, Passengers.

Yet another, "The new Yugo has an air bag. Before an accident, start pumping real fast."   And one more, Man to car dealer: "I'd like a gas cap for my Yugo." Dealer: "Sounds like a fair trade."
