Is this a political babes battle? Move over Maria Belen Chapur. The mistress of the South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford has been the hottest political photo for days since it was discovered that she as having an affair with the sitting Governor of the state, but she may be getting a little competition from a young Carla Bruni in lingerie. While the US tabloids continue the search for Maria the mistress, a whole lot of Carla has been revealed.

The beautiful French first lady has appeared in a sea of lacy white underwear. Photos of the former model taken in 1989 showing her in French-style knickers and camis have surfaced. The images of Bruni were taken for the clothing giant Next's mail order catalog, it was reported.

The timing of the photos is notable because they are being taken as a sign of her earnings potential. At the time, Bruni was just on the brink of success and went on to become one of the top-earning models of her day, raking in £7.5 million a year. Next has provided the pictures as part of its 21st birthday celebration.

The Next Directory was also a launch pad for the likes of Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Claudia Schiffer. Next's Natalie Pead said: "We have consistently discovered modelling's future superstars. "Our shrewd judgment has helped kick-start the careers of a succession of supermodels."
