Was the near miss Angelina Jolie suffered through with Jon Voight a set up?  It has long been reported that the more traditional Brad Pitt has wished for his sweetie Angie to make amends with her estranged dad, but to no avail.

So - did he take the opportunity of a rare night out in LA to give it a shot? 

Life & Style Weekly is reporting that Brad tried to play peacemaker.

The weekly magazine reports that though it seemed like an awkward coincidence an insider cited by the magazine claims that Brad actually persuaded Ocean's Thirteen co-star Scott Caan to invite both father and daughter, hoping a chance meeting would spur a reconciliation.

The item concludes: big mistake.

"Brad totally miscalculated," says the Jolie family friend.

"His intentions were good but entirely misguided. Brad has been pushing Angelina for months to bury the hatchet with her father, but she doesn't want his input. She resents that Brad thinks he knows what's best for her."

Cue the rep™: His rep denies that Brad had any say in who was invited and insists it was "a great night."

But Angie's dad - who by all accounts didn't know his daughter was coming - says he's hoping to end the estrangement, which began in 2002 when he told Access Hollywood that Angie had "mental problems."

"I love my daughter and miss her," he tells Life & Style. "I am confident that one of these days we'll be able to express our love for each other. I look forward to a happy ending."

It would surely be good for the kids - and maybe if he saw them Voight could get their names right.
