Steve Irwin was in his element on September 4 while he was filming the documentary Ocean’s Deadliest in the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland, Australia. But things took a tragic twist when Steve swam too close to a stingray and the startled fish jabbed its sharp serrated barb into the 44-year-old’s heart.
The fearless Crocodile Hunter died shortly after pulling the barb from his own chest. He is survived by his wife, Terri, 42, son Robert, 3, and daughter Bindi, 8, who is following in her dad’s footsteps by working with wildlife. “He would be so happy that I’m happy,” she said. “When I look back at all the memories, that’s what daddy wanted most for me.”
