Colorado ski town Breckenridge is far more than a mile high and wants to stay that way, as the town votes to legalize marijuana on Election Day 2009.  The state still has marijuana as an illegal substance, but an astonishing 72% of the voters in Breckenridge supported the move to legalize the drug.

The measure that passed allows possession of up to one ounce of marijuana by adults 21 and older.  A new rule implemented recently by the administration of President Barack Obama told states the US Federal Government would no longer go after medical marijuana providers, but this hardly seems to apply here.

A report from CBS News states, "The measure is largely symbolic because pot possession remains a state crime for people without medical clearance. But supporters said they wanted to send a message to local law enforcement to stop busting small-time pot smokers."

"This votes demonstrates that Breckenridge citizens overwhelmingly believe that adults should not be punished for making the safer choice to use marijuana instead of alcohol," said Sean McAllister, a Breckenridge attorney who proposed the ordinance. "I believe the implicit implications are that we should have a dialogue about taxing marijuana."
