(Photos, Video) Fort Hood suspected gunman identified as Major Malik Nadal Hasan. A soldier has been identified as the primary suspect in a stunning shooting spree. Eleven fellow soldiers were killed and thirty-one have been wounded in the Fort Hood shooting, officials have disclosed to reporters late Thursday.

According to an ABC News report, "Hasan allegedly opened fire and killed 11 people on the base before he was shot dead, bringing the total number of fatalities to 12." The ABC report notes that the news service has identified the man as Major Malik Nadal Hasan (pictured).

According to a separate report from MSNBC News, he is an "Army psychiatrist who had been promoted to Major in May." He was killed and two other suspects have been apprehended, according to Army Spokesman Lt. General Robert W. Cone.
Photos, video and more here from that network. The first question many have is a possible motive for an act this heinous and for now, government officials are remaining mum.
Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone told ABC the motive for the attack, which took place just after 1:30 p.m. CT, is unclear. He was reportedly ready for deployment to Iraq.
