A rare 'vivid pink' diamond has sold for nearly $11 million at an auction in Hong Kong.  What recession?  AOL News reports, "(The) 5-carat pink diamond sold for a record $10.8 million at auction in Hong Kong Tuesday.  The stone, dubbed "Vivid Pink," sits in a platinum and rose gold setting, flanked by a pair of white diamonds. The sale price was much more than the previously estimated $7 million, according to the auction house Christie's, which handled the sale."

According to Diamonds.net, "The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) graded the diamond in July 2009 as a natural color with VS1 clarity, indicating that the clarity was potentially flawless."  One would hope for $11 million that would be the case.

Forbes notes, "Demand exceeded Christie's' expectations."  In fact, the sale is being hailed as a sign of the economic strength of the Asian market in luxury goods and art, according to the magazine.

Photos and more here from the Christie's slideshow via AOL.  Francois Curiel, Christie's Europe chairman, talked to the Reuters News service and revealed that the stone is a "fabulous pink diamond, probably one of the rarest stones I've ever seen."
