Android and Apple Own 71 Percent of Smartphone Market

Do you own a new iPhone or an Android based smartphone? You are not alone, 71% of smartphone owners have an Apple or Android powered phone.

A new survey reveals about 44 percent of all Americans now own a smartphone and Apple's iOS and Google's Android are dominating app downloading, too.

Nielsen revealed research on Tuesday that outlined the domination.

The numbers: "71 percent of U.S. smartphone owners either own an Android device or iPhone."

and...

"83 percent of apps downloaded in the last 30 days use the iPhone or an Android device."

According to Nielsen's latest data among those who purchased a new mobile phone in the last three months, 56 percent chose smartphones.

Gadget Box adds that "RIM, which makes BlackBerry, continued its decline in US share; Nielsen says RIM had 17.8 percent of the U.S. market, down from 20 percent in July."
