Mar 19, 2010

The winner is in and world champion cheese is Swiss. AOL News reports, "the best cheese of 2010 is a Gruyère made by Cedric Fragniere of Switzerland." The top three winners were all from overseas.

Wisconsin Ag Connection reports, "Sennerei Andeer of Switzerland was the first runner-up with an entry in the Smear Ripened Hard Cheeses category. And third place went to the Alois Pesendorfer Crew from Austria, who brought a product called Gmundner Berg Premium."

The AOL report from Dave Thier reveals that "to dairy enthusiasts, fine cheese has all the complexity of wine, combining elements of craftsmanship and agriculture into a nuanced, or powerful, gourmet food." The contest is intense, with judges examining the cheese for "flavor, body texture and color."

ABC News explores why cheese is "trendy" all of a sudden. They have some conclusions, including food-related TV programming and high-definition TV.
