Mysterious Virus Spreads (Video), SARS Like Coronavirus in UK - US Preparedness?

By Staff

A mystery virus is spreading through the UK, and health officials say the SARS like virus is a coronavirus.

No travel restrictions are in place for the mystery virus.

According to UK Guardian, a man who returned recently from the Middle East and Pakistan is under intensive care in a Manchester hospital where he has been confirmed as the first UK resident to be infected by the new form of virus.

The man is the 10th confirmed case of this particular coronavirus, BBC reports.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) which caused nearly 800 deaths in 2002 and 2003, was a coronavirus.

The death rate of those confirmed with SARS infection was about 10 percent.

Many in the US are already worried if the US is fully prepared for any kind of a pandemic (watch a video below on that), but Britain's Health Protection Agency (HPA) says there's no need to panic and adds that no travel restrictions are in place for this virus.

John Watson, of the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said:

"Our assessment is that the risk associated with novel coronavirus to the general UK population remains extremely low and the risk to travelers to the Arabian peninsula and surrounding countries remains very low.

No travel restrictions are in place but people who develop severe respiratory symptoms, such as shortness of breath, within 10 days of returning from these countries should seek medical advice and mention which countries they have visited."

Right now - evidence seems to suggest it cannot be passed from person to person.

The virus has so far only been identified in a small number of people who presented with fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.
