Prom Canceled - Lesbian Date for Constance McMillen Gets School Dance Nixed
By Jennifer CoxMar 11, 2010
A Mississippi prom dance has been canceled because of a lesbian date wish by student Constance McMillen. According to the Associated Press, the reason the school will nix the annual spring fling will sound unbelievable to many people. The wire report reveals "a lesbian student (Constance McMillen) sought to attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo" and that as the reason for the district to cancel the dance.
No Prom - School Can't Handle Lesbian Date!
Wait - what year is this? The report adds, "School policy requires that senior prom dates be of the opposite sex."
Another report adds that the district's statement didn't mention McMillen's request, but did refer to unspecified recent "distractions" for the reason behind the shocking decision to cancel the dance for the entire school. Fox News adds that one group is outraged and, "the ACLU said a school policy banning same-sex prom dates violated McMillen's constitutional rights."***
According to the Clarion (Miss.) Ledger, the young woman now fears retaliation. "Oh, my God. That's really messed up because the message they are sending is that if they have to let gay people go to prom that they are not going to have one," she said. "A bunch of kids at school are really going to hate me for this, so in a way it's really retaliation."
Reactions across the web are similar. Emily Moulton from Gather writes, "What a terrible thing for them to do to their students and especially to brave Constance McMillen. Now, not every high school student is wild about prom, but most will make it their business to be there."
The USA Today has updated details here and notes that school officials told McMillen last month that she could not bring her sophomore girlfriend to the prom.Got an opinion? Share your thoughts now.
