Bee Swarm Attack in Phoenix Area: Phone Calls Used for Warnings

A bee swarm attack in the Phoenix area led authorities to use a call system to warn residents of a massive hive. Several people were stung during the incident. Firefighters were called to the residence in Scottsdale, Arizona when two workers found the massive hive in a tree.

CBS 5 KPHO reports that the Scottsdale Fire Department said a hive the size of a kitchen trashcan was found in a pine tree some 35 feet in the air located at a home. Four people, including two firefighters, were stung by a swarm of bees.

According to KNXV-TV nearby schools and residents were notified and an estimated 577 telephone numbers were notified within a 1/4 mile radius of the incident using a call system.

The TV station reports that a bee removal service was called out to the home to remove the beehive, which was estimated to weigh about 200 pounds.
