Global Warming Weather Channel Row: Heidi Cullen vs. James Spann
Heidi Cullen hosts a show on the Weather Channel called "The Climate Code with Dr. Heidi Cullen." She also writes on the Weather Channel web site and has caused quite a stir with her online blog. Though she has since tried to spin it, the weather babe basically says global warming is man made and if you are a meteorologist on any local television show and you refuse to tout that view, you should not be certified the American Meteorological Society.
In Ms. Cullen's world, meteorologists must tout the Weather Channel's 'expert' point of view or be marginalized as a kook that has been decertified by the AMA.
Weather guy James Spann answered that with his own entry on his blog. "Well, well. Some "climate expert" on "The Weather Channel" wants to take away AMS certification from those of us who believe the recent "global warming" is a natural process. So much for "tolerance", huh," he writes.
He continues, "I have been in operational meteorology since 1978, and I know dozens and dozens of broadcast meteorologists all over the country. Our big job: look at a large volume of raw data and come up with a public weather forecast for the next seven days. I do not know of a single TV meteorologist who buys into the man-made global warming hype. I know there must be a few out there, but I can't find them."
He covers the weather for the ABC affiliate 33/40 in Central Alabama.
Once exposed, Cullen tried to backtrack, but refused to back down. "I've read all your comments saying I want to silence meteorologists who are skeptical of the science of global warming," she writes. "That is not true. The point of my post was never to stifle discussion. It was to raise it to a level that doesn't confuse science and politics. Freedom of scientific expression is essential."
Trouble is she never took back her initial statement. So -if she were thegrand poobah of the Weather forecasters, Cullen would strip Spann of his credentials. No scientific expression for Mr. Spann or the others that disagree.
I must confess I've never watched Cullen's show. I had no idea that she went to bed each night reading Al Gore's book 'An Inconvenient Truth' like it was the Bible. But I will TiVo her Sunday night program and see just how far the Weather Channel is willing to go in stifling dissent and spreading propaganda.
