Jesse Ventura Backs Down: Former WWE Wrestler Says No Senate Run

Jul 16, 2008

Wouldn't it have been nice to see a Al Franken and former WWE wrestler Jesse Ventura steel cage death match for the US Senate? The wild political state of Minnesota almost had yet another embarrassment on its hands as former state governor Jesse Ventura was said to be considering a run for the US Senate.

They already have former Saturday Night Live writer and "Stuart Saves His Family" comic Al Franken running to unseat Republican Norm Coleman. Franken is trying to use his experience as a pundit for the liberal radio network "Air America" to build a case as to why people from Minnesota should elect him to serve.

Ventura made it all the way to CNN's "Larry King Live" to announce the non-announcement that he would not be seeking the office. It would have certainly added to the freak show that is Minnesota politics. One report from WCCO notes that Ventura is one of the 9/11 conspiracy kooks that believe that the U.S. government may have engineered the attacks to gain control of Mideast oil.

Even one time Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul said he didn't believe that. Ventura says he doesn't want to subject his family to the scrutiny of another high profile political campaign. There is one disclaimer from the former WWE wrestler, he says he won't run "at this moment."
