Photos: Everest Skydiver Plunge, Freefall Record

Oct 6, 2008

A British skydiver has entered the record books as one of the first to parachute jump over Mount Everest towards the world's highest landing zone. "It was amazing, just spectacular,” Holly Budge, 29, said after landing at 12,350 feet above sea level. According to the Times Online that is the highest, "drop zone" achieved by a parachutist.

"We had one minute of freefall and while we were above the clouds you could see Everest and the other high mountains popping out of the top," she said. One would guess it would be an incredible thrill and a shocking plunge.

According to another report from the UK Times, "The parachutist was a group of 32 adventurers who paid £17,000 each to jump from a plane around 1,000 feet above Everest's summit, freefalling past the summit at speeds of 180mph before opening their canopies and descending thousands of feet into the mountain's lower valleys."

Photos of the spectacular jump are here. The whole group will take some time to make all of the jumps. The paper reports that it is expected to take up to three days for all of them to make their jumps, which are also raising money for charity.
