Photos, Video: Stunning Spinning Skyscraper Plans for Dubai

Jun 27, 2008

An Italian architect will design a shape-shifting 'spinning' skyscraper could someday dazzle and energize the Dubai skyline with its revolving floors and environmentally friendly, electricity generating wind turbines. The photos are stunning as is the video that shows the lengths the building will go to for the twists and turns. It certainly looks incredible, but is all this really necessary or is this just overkill of a wild design.

It certainly depends on one's perspective but keep this in mind, according to an Associated Press report, the spinning floors (which will be hung like rings around an immobile cement core) would offer residents a constantly changing view of the Persian Gulf and the city's futuristic skyline.

The UK Daily Mail notes that the brainchild behind the operation is David Fisher, owner of the Rotating Tower Technology Company. He said he was inspired to create the perpetual motion skyscrapers after soaking in the view from a friend's apartment in Manhattan. They have several more photos and a video here. National Geographic also has video here.

"Today's life is dynamic, so the space we are living in should be dynamic as well," Fisher told the Mail. "Buildings will follow the rhythms of nature. They will change direction and shape from spring to summer, from sunrise to sunset, and adjust themselves to the weather. Buildings will be alive."

Other unbelievable features of the spinning skyscraper include giant wind turbines sandwiched between floors that will sate the building's electricity needs, and lifts that allow penthouse residents to park their cars in their apartments … which spin on voice-activated command.

One thing may give some investors a bit of pause. Mr. Fisher has never built a skyscraper before. Previously he has created marble bathroom suites for hotels.
