By Gene Byrd

What will the rice shortage mean to America? Is it time for American families to stockpile food? There are those that are suggesting that people in the United States should begin stockpiling food, in fact one report in the Wall Street Journal suggests that is exactly the right idea. But the reason may not be what you think. As it is the Journal, the thinking from the columnist is that it makes economic sense to stock up. In other words, buy low now before the price goes up again.

That's good enough advice, but don't panic. Right now customers from many of the big box stores are going to be limited in the amount of rice they can purchase at some particular stores. Is America really in danger of running out of rice? Likely the answer is no, but Costco, Sam's Club and perhaps some other individual stores want to make certain that there is not a run on the product so they are limiting purchases.

So why is there so much panic? World conditions and unrest have some countries with legitimate shortages. And with that, news and speculations disguised as news is being spread that the possibility that we could actually run out here. The panic is spreading across the country on some talk radio stations and of course on the World Wide Web.
The US is not going to run out of food. But as with everything these days from global warming on, panic is easy if the news and speculation is repeated over and over. The best answer on hoarding food is only stock what you will eat before it expires. And as food costs are rising each week, if you have plenty of storage space and will consume the food before it goes bad, then you will likely save a few bucks by stocking up now.
