Saddam Hussein Hanging Video Shows Defiance, Taunts and Glee
The Saddam Hussein execution has been carried out in what has been called surreal and cinematic. The tyrant was reportedly defiant to the end, and though the entire hanging was videotaped with a stable camera, the only video to show the dictator's execution has been from an unidentified cell phone camera.
Defiant to the end Hussein, as he prepared to move onto the trap- door of the gallows, was told by one of his executioners," god damn you.” The doomed tyrant was heard replying: “god damn you.” Then another voice could be heard urging Saddam to “go to hell."
By several accounts, Saddam was calm but scornful of his captors, engaging in a give-and-take with the crowd gathered to watch him die and insisting he was Iraq's savior, not its tyrant and scourge.
"He said we are going to heaven and our enemies will rot in hell and he also called for forgiveness and love among Iraqis but also stressed that the Iraqis should fight the Americans and the Persians," Munir Haddad, an appeals court judge who witnessed the hanging, told the British Broadcasting Corp.
Another witness, national security adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie, told The New York Times that one of the guards shouted at Saddam: "You have destroyed us. You have killed us. You have made us live in destitution."
"I have saved you from destitution and misery and destroyed your enemies, the Persian and Americans," Saddam responded, al-Rubaie told the Times.
He is then hanged. Saddam is seen plunging through the trap-door. As he dropped his neck snapped with an audible crack.
The Sun UK is reporting that the Iraqis were so delighted at the despot’s demise that immediately after his death they danced a jig around his body as it dangled from the noose. The same report cites one witness he died with his eyes open. In the video his corpse is then seen dangling at the end of the rope with his head at a grotesque angle. One onlooker proclaims: “The tyrant has fallen.”
Another voice orders: “Let him swing for three minutes.”
But his motionless body was left to dangle for ten minutes before a doctor pronounced him dead. During that time the guards and executioner performed their dance.
Thousands of Iraqis flocked to Saddam Hussein's hometown of Ouja on Sunday, where the deposed leader was buried in a religious compound 24 hours after his execution.
