Starbucks Corp. has a new more revealing logo of its trademark mermaid and it has stirred up a bit of controversy. The new logo offers a more revealing look at the coffee chain's mermaid symbol and goes with brown instead of the once trademark green as its color is getting mixed reviews from marketing and public relations experts, an MSNBC article notes.

Some believe that it is unusual while other think it is over the top. The logo features mermaid topless and bare-chested with her tail fin split in half. As soon as the photos hit the controversy was on. A Christian group based in San Diego found grounds for outrage over the new retro-style logo for Starbucks Coffee, a report from the Associated Press notes.

The Resistance says the new image "has a naked woman on it with her legs spread like a prostitute," Mark Dice, founder of the group, said in a news release. "Need I say more? It's extremely poor taste, and the company might as well call themselves Slutbucks."
Is the new logo controversy enough to spur sales in a tough economy? Some reports claim that high gas prices and a sagging housing market have bitten into consumer confidence and Starbucks sales. Is this enough to get the buzz back for the Seattle Coffee company?
