Amanda Knox & Trial: "Correct" Verdict, American Awaits Appeal

Dec 11, 2009

Amanda Knox believes her trial was "correct" according to a quote in an ABC News article citing an Italian member of Parliament. The 22-year old American student Knox and her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 25, were convicted of committing sexual assault and killing in the stabbing Meredith Kercher in the university town of Perugia.

ABC News has this quote, which seems quite off as most supporters were highly critical of the case, including the evidence and the tabloid coverage. "I asked her if she had seen how her country had reacted to the verdict," said Walter Verini, a Parliamentarian representing the region of Umbria where Knox is jailed.

"She was evidently aware of everything that was happening, but did not say what effect she thought it would have on her legal situation."

He quoted Knox as saying that her trial was "correct," and that she "still has faith in the Italian legal system." Most of her supporters believed she would not receive a fair trial and would be found guilty. Now what happens?

Appeals are scheduled, but won't begin until March of next year. Full coverage here. "I thought I would be home for Christmas," Knox told Verini. "But instead I have to wait." Knox believes she will eventually be freed on appeal.
