Amanda Knox Trial - Prosecutor Fantasy, American Claims

Nov 22, 2009

The closing in the trial of Amanda Knox took seven hours. The American is on trial for the murder of Meredith Kercher, but she told the court it was "Puro fantasia" (pure fantasy) that she could have killed the woman she called her friend. She is accused along with her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito. Prosecutors contend she she fatally stabbed her British roommate to death in retaliation during a drug-fueled sex game.

The crime was indeed brutal. Kercher, a student at Leeds University, was found on November 2, 2007 with her throat slit, her face battered and her clothing partially ripped off in an apartment she and Knox shared in Perugia, Italy. Her windpipe had been crushed.

Lead prosecutor Giuliano Mignini said that Knox murdered her roommate out of spite because Kercher disapproved of her lifestyle: “She had harbored hatred for Meredith, and that was the time when it could explode,” he told the court. “The time had come to take revenge,” Giuliano Mignini continued.

"It is not the truth," Amanda said in a retort. "Meredith was my friend. I did not hate her," she said in Italian, her voice quivering with emotion. "The idea that I wanted to vindicate myself against someone who was always nice to me is absurd. The Seattle PI.Com has more quotes and information from Italy.

Her parents worry that the evidence will be overshadowed by the negative press and wonder if the American woman is getting a fair trial in Italy.
