Arrest at Wal-Mart (Photos) - Heather Ellis Readies for Court Battle

Nov 16, 2009

Heather Ellis was arrested at a Wal-Mart three years ago. The scene is a batch of check out lines, and as Ellis switched to join her cousin, (her line was moving faster) others behind waiting voiced their displeasure. Pushing and shoving allegedly ensued, shouts of anger were also purportedly voiced and the police made their way down to sort things out, eventually slapping handcuffs on Heather Ellis.

Ellis, an African-American woman, says she was pushed by a white customer, hassled by store employees, called racial slurs and even physically mistreated by Kennett police officer.

According to an Associated Press report, "Police say in court documents that Ellis refused requests to calm down and leave the property, allegedly kicking one's shin and splitting another's lip while resisting arrest."

More here, including pictures from the news service. Her trial on charges of assaulting police officers, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace begins Wednesday, Nov. 18, in Dunklin County Circuit Court.
