Doomsday Clock 2013 Holds Steady at 5 Minutes Until Destruction

Doomsday clock holds steady - scientists still very worried.

The hands of the "Doomsday Clock" will remain at five minutes until midnight for 2013.

The scientists who set the hands of the clock have been wringing their hands for decades, complaining that mankind is only minutes from destruction at any given moment, citing nuclear arms and now climate change as the reasons mankind is ready to destroy the planet.

The clock was initiated by scientists in 1947 and the warning then was the nuclear weapons development and the arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union was going to lead to the destruction of all mankind.

The scientists set the clock at 7 minutes until midnight and destruction that year, showing their concern over the arms race.

By 1949, it was moved up to three minutes to midnight as the USA and the USSR butted heads over the development of nuclear weapons.

Tick, tick...In 1953, after the first test of the hydrogen bomb, the doomsday clock ticked to two minutes until midnight.

It has since varied back and forth almost always under 10 minutes until doom.

However, in 1991, the clock was moved to 17 minutes to midnight when United States and Soviet Union signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, but it has declined steadily since.

This year is the second straight year of five minutes to midnight.
