Ex-SS Adolf Storms (Photos) Charged, Nazi War Criminal?
Nov 18, 2009
Adolf Storms, a former SS sergeant, was charged with 58 counts of murder on Tuesday and is accused of being a Nazi war criminal. The man was named in the German press and a report from the UK Times Online notes that he "becomes the latest pensioner to be prosecuted for alleged Nazi war crimes as courts rush to secure convictions before the defendants become too infirm and the witness testimony too unreliable."

He is reported to be a 90-year-old former member of an elite Waffen SS unit. The report notes that "Storms was found by accident last year, as part of a research project by Andreas Forster, a 28-year-old student at the University of Vienna."

The Huffington Post reports:
Forster then obtained files from federal archives in Berlin that enabled him to link the former sergeant to the massacre, his professor, Walter Manoschek, told The Associated Press.
Manoschek visited Storms, 90, at his home in the city of Duisburg several times last year after finding him in the phone book. The professor conducted about 12 hours of interviews in which Storms repeatedly said that he does not remember the killings.

In-depth coverage here from the UK Times. The case will be based on written statements made in previous trials as no living witness has yet been found to testify.
Storms had lived quietly and worked as a railway station manager and was described by German authorities as a "retiree from Duisburg."
