Does Iceland have a Loch Ness like monster deep in its waters?

The photo above and footage shows what looks like a creature swimming in Jokulsa river in Fljotsdal valley in Iceland.

According to the UK Daily Mail, the video was "taken by Hjörtur Kjerúlf at the glacial river Jökulsá í Fljótsdal, east Iceland," and "appears to show the serpent-like monster known as Lagarfljótsormurinn, or Lagarfljót's Worm."

Some viewers of the amateur footage of the Lagarfljot worm have suggested it is a fake due to the rather mechanised manner in which it swims through the water.

So is it real or a hoax with a robot?

Lore suggests its real.

The Lagarfljots river worm is the most well know monster in Icelandic folklore, first mentioned in 1345.

According to Today's THV:

"Legend has it that the worm had first been a small heather worm that was put onto a golden ring. This was done so the the gold would grow and the ring become bigger. When the owner of the ring came to collect it some time later he realised, to his great horror, that the worm had grown enormously but the ring had not. The owner threw the ring and the worm into Lagarfljot river where the worm continued to grow."

Also, according to the legend - sightings of the beast are considered a bad omen.
